Best Swim Shirts for Gynecomastia: Back in the Water
The pool is where a lot of us quietly gave up. A good swim shirt is the cheapest way back in. Here's which kind works for gyno, and why the classic tight rash guard isn't it on its own.

Quick answer
For gyno, the best swim shirt is fitted but not tight: the Kanu Surf short-sleeve swim shirt, which buyers say hides a belly or chest and comes in extended sizes. For beach days, Speedo's loose Easy tee shows no shape at all. A classic tight rash guard like O'Neill's Basic Skins clings when wet, so wear it dark and under something looser.

The problem with rash guards
Ask anyone what to wear in the water and they'll say "a rash guard." The trouble is that a classic rash guard is skin-tight on purpose. Surfers want it to move like skin and not balloon in the waves. Wet, it clings even more. For gyno, that can show your chest more clearly than no shirt at all.
So for us there are really three kinds of swim shirt:
Fitted but not tight. Close enough not to balloon, loose enough not to cling. This is the sweet spot for most guys with gyno.
Loose swim tees. Cut like a regular T-shirt in quick-dry fabric. Great on the sand and the boat, a bit draggy for real swimming.
Tight rash guards. Good for surfing and laps, and best for gyno as a base layer under a loose tee, or in a dark color.
Kanu Surf Swim Shirt
Best for gyno
Kanu Surf Men's Short Sleeve UPF 50+ Swim Shirt
Best for: Hiding chest and belly in the water, in regular and extended sizes
The reason it's first: buyers describe the fit as tailored without clinging, and a couple of them say outright that it hides their belly or chest. The extended sizes matter too, because big-guy swimwear is often an afterthought.
Pros
- Fitted but not tight, and a couple of buyers say it hides a belly or chest
- Soft and comfortable
- UPF 50 sun protection
- Regular and extended sizes
Cons
- Runs small for some buyers
- A little long, and one buyer says it stretched
- Thicker fabric holds water and dries slower
Sizing tip: Runs a little small for some buyers; between sizes, go up. Extended sizes are available.
My take: The pick for gyno. It's fitted without clinging, the fabric is on the thicker side, and buyers specifically say it hides a belly or chest. It comes in big sizes too.
Speedo Easy Long Sleeve
Loosest cover-up
Speedo Men's Easy Long Sleeve Loose Fit Swim Tee
Best for: The loosest cover-up, for the beach and the boat
If your plan is the beach, the kids' pool or a boat, not swimming laps, this is the most relaxed option. Long sleeves also mean less sunscreen to reapply.
Pros
- Loose, relaxed cut that doesn't show your shape
- Light and very comfortable, say most buyers
- Strong sun protection on long days outside
- Dries quickly
Cons
- Runs large
- Long sleeves are too long for some
- Can stick to your skin right out of the water
- The label says hand wash
Sizing tip: Runs large. Several buyers say size down, though one who did still found it loose.
My take: The baggiest of the three, which is the point: there's nothing tight to show your shape. Best for beach days, boats and the kids' pool rather than swimming laps.
O'Neill Basic Skins
Snug layer
O'Neill Men's Basic Skins Short Sleeve Rash Guard
Best for: A snug layer for surfing and swimming laps
On its own, this is the shirt that shows your shape. Under a loose swim tee, it becomes the trick that works: the tight layer holds everything still, the loose layer hides the outline.
Pros
- Comfortable once on, say buyers
- Strong sun protection
- Dries fast
- Well stitched and durable
Cons
- Runs small, the most common complaint
- Tight sleeves
- Clings like a second skin when wet, which shows your shape
Sizing tip: Skin-tight on purpose, and most buyers say it runs small. Size up unless you want it like a wetsuit.
My take: A classic surf rash guard: tight, quick-drying and tough. On its own it shows your shape, so for gyno it works best in a dark color with a loose swim tee over it, or when you need something that won't ride up in waves.
Which swim shirt for which day
| Day | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pool party, hanging out | Fitted swim shirt in a dark color | Looks like a normal shirt, doesn't cling |
| Beach, boat, sun all day | Loose long-sleeve swim tee | No shape, most sun protection |
| Swimming laps | Fitted swim shirt | Doesn't drag in the water like a loose tee |
| Surfing | Tight rash guard under a loose tee | Holds still in waves, outline hidden |
| Water park with slides | Fitted swim shirt | Loose tees ride up on the way down |
Getting the size right
Swim shirts are sized for wet, not dry. A shirt that feels a touch loose in the fitting room hangs about right once it's soaked and heavy. With the Kanu Surf, buyers between sizes go up. With the Speedo Easy tee, most say size down. With the O'Neill, sizing up is the only way to make it a layer rather than a wetsuit.
Length matters more than you'd think. A swim shirt that's too short rides up when you lift your arms or come down a slide, which is the exact moment you don't want your stomach showing. Pick one that reaches well past your waistband.
In the water with gyno
Do
- Pick dark colors; light ones go see-through and show shadows when wet
- Add nipple covers under a thin swim shirt if the points show
- Bring a dry shirt for after; a wet swim shirt clings most on land
- Rinse swimwear after the pool so chlorine doesn't eat the stretch
Don't
- Wear a white rash guard
- Wear a regular cotton T-shirt in the water; it sags and clings when wet
- Swim in a land compression shirt you can't stand to have soaked all day
- Let a shirt keep you on the sidelines
The head game at the beach
A swim shirt fixes the practical problem. The other half is the voice in your head telling you everyone is looking. I've written about that part in shirtless at the beach with gyno. And if nipples are the main giveaway, nipple covers work under a swim shirt too.
Questions people ask
What should a guy with gynecomastia wear swimming?
A swim shirt that's fitted but not skin-tight, in a dark color, is the best all-round choice. For lounging on the beach, a loose long-sleeve swim tee shows even less.
Do rash guards hide man boobs?
A tight rash guard clings when wet and can show your shape. It works better as a base layer under a loose swim tee, or in a dark color with a fitted cut.
Can I swim in a compression shirt?
Many guys do, under a swim shirt. Land compression shirts aren't made for chlorine and sun, so rinse it right after and expect it to wear out sooner.
Will a white swim shirt show my chest?
Usually yes. Light colors can turn see-through when wet and show shadows. Navy, black and dark patterns hide the most.
